Dimension Magic

Few people on Aldrin remember the time prior to the discovery of Dimension Shards in Votura, but some do. It took the world by complete surprise - and rightfully so; as the Drakona Empire and the Conclave of the Eight have proven, the powers of Dimension Magic are truly incredible, and capable of great change... both good, and bad.

Dimension Magic is a rare and exclusive magic across the cluster, restricted to access only with Dimension Shards and the Shard Ritual, its powers concern teleportation and the control of forces such as gravity.

History of Dimension Magic

Before the Gates

It's believed that the ancient Hysilens' may have used Dimension Magic in an age prior to the gates, but even this is hard to say - the relation between the jumpgates and Dimension Magic suggest something of a link, but would imply that the Hysilens had a magical bloodline for Dimension Magic, making them the only species with such a thing.   There are many holes with the theory in the eyes of many - as it was believed that the Hysilens' possess race-wide Fire Magic and Summoning Magic bloodlines, and to also possess a Dimension Magic bloodline would potentially make them the only race to have triple or greater bloodlines. It's of course, also possible that the fox-folk had other methods to learn the magic types.

Early History

As a result of this, there is no history of Dimension Magic prior to the Shard Ritual, as it was impossible to possess naturally in a bloodline. Following the development of the Shard Ritual, the first discovery of Dimension Magic led to a sharp uptake in studies of the practice as those with a great deal of wealth picked it up.

Modern History

Few places are more synonymous with Dimension Magic than the Aurelian Empire - a rarity in the cluster for having a general, extreme preference for magic - it was still secondary to their technology, but in a more complementary fashion. The Aurelians had much of the cluster's initial supply of Dimension Shards, and so it was them that led the discovery of new uses for the magic.   All in all though, dimension magic is still in its infancy within the cluster, as it has yet to really mature.

Aldrin History

The story of Dimension Magic on Aldrin is fairly similar to that of Dimension Magic in the cluster, only more explicably tied to the Drakona Empire and other regional powers of the parts of the world it was found in. Owing to the nature of Aldrin, the techniques of Dimension Magic have been studied for much longer than in the cluster, but being as it and the shards trace their origins back to the Great Demonic War on Aldrin - far before the shards surfaced in the cluster itself.   In many ways, the world of Aldrin has the most extensive network of dimension magic casters around, with the famous Conclave of the Eight being a collection of 8 master spellcasters providing Teleportation Nexuses between major cities in the regions they reside in.

Dimension Shards

Natural proficiency in dimension magic is unheard of in the cluster and Aldrin; at best, maybe the Hysilens' knew of it naturally, but nobody knows for sure. All of those with a talent for the craft learned that talent through Dimension Shards, and these shards are - as a result - among the most coveted of all Crysium Shards.   They're so coveted, in fact, that even on Aldrin general knowledge on where the dimension shards can be found is a precious matter indeed; it's believed that the Aurelian Empire fiercely controls the largest supply of the shards in the cluster, hoarding them for their own internal use, which tracks with their frequent use of the magic.   On Aldrin, the shards are purported to be more plentiful in the new world as a result of the arcane disasters that took place there, but in the old world and in Subterra, it's extremely rare, with the only known location being The Priory in Khalorn, and Votura in Drakona.

Crysium Shards are magically-infused crystals known to exist in space on asteroids and meteors, as well as on a precious rare few planets, such as Aldrin. Many tales are spun with regards to the origin of the shards.

Uses of Dimension Magic

Force Control

One of the earliest forms of dimension magic, a Spatial Mage learns to manipulate the space and forces around themselves early on in their career. These abilities can vary considerably, but tend to involve the alteration of gravity, both in an isolated area - to effectively pull and push things - and in a larger area. Understandably, these abilities are seen as some of the most powerful types of magic in the cluster, despite their limited, localised effects.   Beyond that, smaller changes can be enacted too, allowing for the creation of temporary passages through walls, the mending of damaged or destroyed objects and items, and much more; this affords dimension magic a large variety of defensive uses, as well as offensive uses.

Teleportation

Pretty much the type of magic that dimension magic is known for, teleportation varies considerably in both complexity and range, with novice Spatial Mages being restricted to short-distance teleportation with a requirement to know the destination they seek to teleport to, generally restricting it for personal transport across spacecraft and space stations they're familiar with - or local planetary settlements.   This is a pervasive issue, and - combined with the restriction of only teleporting the caster - is what enables the more advanced sibling techniques to these, to teleport longer distances safely, and to send others instead of just the caster.

Portals and Nexuses

Portals and Teleportation Nexuses are an important cornerstone of Dimension Magic teleportation dynamics, allowing for far greater versatility in the capabilities of a Spatial Mage. Portals are a form of sustained gateway - not dissimilar to the jumpgates - through which other creatures can pass, draining the Aether of the caster for each one that passes through. When the caster ceases to channel the portal, it fades away a few seconds later, allowing enough time for the caster to also use it. Through this method, Spatial Mages can transport large groups of people through their abilities, especially when used in concert with a Teleportation Nexus.   Teleportation Nexuses, by contrast, are an incredibly safe method of teleportation, not unlike portals, but more powerful and set in a single location. A nexus is almost always arcanically coded to require authorization to use - usually a magical key or password - and can send people to other nexuses, provided they are within the same sphere of influence.

Dimension Magic and the Jumpgates

One of the aspects of dimension magic that has puzzled scholars for countless eras is its relation to the jumpgate network, which are believed to be constructed under the same basic principles. This is supported by the fact that teleportation and portal magics can navigate through a single nearby jumpgate, allowing sufficiently powerful Spatial Mages to teleport into a bordering sector.   Nobody yet knows the true relation that the jumpgates have to Dimension Magic, but there's little to suggest that such a link doesn't exist.
